Marinus Baronial Birthday 2008

What is Marinus?

The Barony of Marinus is part of the Society for Creative Anachronism, a non-profit organization dedicated to the re-creation, study, and teaching of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The Middle Ages are also referred to as the medieval (or "mediaeval", as other English-speaking nations spell it) time period.

Our time period covers from roughly the fall of Rome to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England, or approximately 470 A.D to 1600 A.D. We do not reenact pre-1600 history; we re-create the better parts of the mediaeval world - we dream of Camelot and act with chivalry and courtesy, and ignore the troublesome aspects such as the Black Death and the lack of indoor plumbing.

To participate in the SCA, each person decides on a Medieval or Renaissance name and time period. Most people also decide on a country, and many develop a full Medieval or Renaissance persona with a personal history and complete personality. Most of us are European, although we do have the occasional traveler from the fabled lands of China, Africa, or Arabia.

Almost every weekend has a medieval event we can attend for fun and self-education. We also enjoy demonstrating our Medieval skills, including fighting, weaving, and calligraphy, to schools, scout groups, libraries, and most other groups who ask.

The Barony of Marinus is located in southeast Virginia. Our area of Tidewater, which is also known as Southside, is the part of Hampton Roads that includes Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and eastern Suffolk.
